A few hours after this show, Gary Speed hanged himself

Wales football team manager Gary Speed, 42 appeared on the BBC's Football Focus show during lunchtime on 26th November 2011.

At 7am the next day he was found dead, having hanged himself in the garage of his home in Cheshire.

He was one of the Premier League greats, the first player to make 500 appearances in the competition across spells with Leeds United, Everton, Newcastle United and Bolton Wanderers. He held the record of 535 Premier League appearances until David James passed that landmark.

He won the league title with Leeds in 1992, the last season before the Premier League began. He was twice an FA Cup runner-up with Newcastle United.

In total he made over 700 appearances before retiring from playing at Sheffield United in 2010. He made his final appearance against Wolves on November 25, 2008.

As a midfielder for Wales, he won 85 international caps.

He became manager for the Welsh national team in December 2010.

In 2010 he was awarded an MBE for services to football.

Probably the last photo ever taken of him alive, as he poses with a fan outisde the BBC studios in Salford. This photo was taken as Speed walked out of the studios with former teammate Gary McAllister at 2.30pm.
