Photos taken inside OrthoMetals, Zwolle, Netherlands on 14th November 2011.
Workers sift through dusty containers of screws, rods and iron balls and sort them for processing. In the mix are prosthetic hips, artificial knees and metal implants.
Imperishable body parts are recovered from the ashes of cremated people, and precious metals are also recovered by the crematoria and offered to the family or placed in the urn.
While recycling the replacement parts of a loved one who'd been cremated sounds grisly, it's actually good news for funeral homes, the environment and families, because they'll know that the things that made the departed more comfortable are not being thrown away.
OrthoMetals recover 200 tons of valuable metals every year from funeral parlours.
