The F-1 is a rocket engine used in the Saturn V rocket, which carried the Apollo 11 landing module out of the Earth's atmosphere and towards the Moon. Five F-1 engines were used in the S-IC first stage, which served as the main launch vehicle in the Apollo program.
The F-1 is still the most powerful single-chamber liquid-fueled rocket engine ever developed.
Contractor: Rocketdyne.
Meanwhile, the RD-170 is the world's most powerful liquid-fuel rocket engine. It has slightly more thrust than the F-1. It uses a cluster of four smaller combustion chambers and nozzles, instead of the F-1's single chamber.
Designed and produced in the USSR by NPO Energomash for use with Energia launch vehicle.
