Abu Sayyaf came to the forefront of the nation's consciousness on 3rd May 2000 when they occupied the dive resort island Sipadan and took 21 people hostage. The names of the leaders became well known: Khaddafi Janjalani, Isnilon Hapilon, Abu Sabaya, Radulan Sahiron, Ghalib Andang (Commander Robot), Umbra Jumdail (Dr Abu Pula), and Mujib Susukan.
