Photos of the second person to spacewalk: Ed White, 3 June 1965

On 18th March 1965, Alexei Leonov became the first person to leave a spacecraft to do a "spacewalk". His lasted for 12 minutes. The photos/videos of that feat are rather grainy.

However, the 2nd person to do so had it much better - they carried a modified 70mm Hasselblad 500C camera, which looks something like this:



On 3rd June 1965, Ed White clambered out of the Gemini IV spacecraft, 178 miles above the earth and stayed there for 23 minutes, covering 6,500 miles, while the other crewmember, James McDivitt took the following amazing photos:





It all looks very scary but apparently they had a hard time persuading him to go back in. What if the tether had snapped?

Solar eclipse as seen from outer space

This image was taken on 21st February 2012 from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), which is a satellite located in geosynchronous orbit, about 22,000 miles (36,000 kilometers) above the Earth's surface.

This view resulted when the moon came in between the SDO satellite and the sun. For 1 hour and 41 minutes the SDO observed the Lunar Transit.

This event only happens a few times a year.



The following video shows the lunar eclipse in a variety of wavelengths. Each wavelength shows a different temperature and layer of the Sun, hence allows us to study the sun and its activities.



The SDO is a NASA mission which will observe the Sun for over five years. It was launched in February 2010.
